Whether that be traditional specialist masonry work, requiring pick and re-point of the lime mortar using the old-style scutch chisel between the exterior stone wall joints, or replacing/repairing the original sash or mullion windows, to replacing the original roof with stone slate; it doesn’t come cheap. As I’m sure those privileged enough to own a Listed Building are only to aware. It’s also a criminal offence to carry out work on a Listed Building with Listed Building Consent.

So, what is a Listed Building?

By definition, a ‘Listed Building’ is a building, object or structure that has been judged to be of national importance in terms of architectural or historic interest, and included on a special register, called the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. These are complied by the Department for Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS), under the provisions of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act of 1990. The list includes a wide variety of structures, from castles, cathedrals, to milestones and even village pumps.

Listed Buildings are listed in their entirety, meaning both the interior and exterior of the building are fully protected. In addition to that, any object or structure fixed to the building or within the curtilage are also protected.
